Thank you for participating in the 2023 Sunshine Coast BioBlitz!

Stay tuned for more biodiversity and citizen science in our 2024 BioBlitz.
Date to be announced soon!

Welcome to the 2023 Sunshine Coast BioBlitz!

This year the BioBlitz will focus on student learning and moving students beyond the classroom walls and into our local outdoor spaces to examine biodiversity. Classroom resources have been developed for Primary, Intermediate and Secondary classrooms to help facilitate and engage students in a citizen science experience. You are encouraged to get outside and BioBlitz as many times as possible between Dec. 1 and 22, and record your findings using the iNaturalist App. Participating classes will be entered into a prize draw based on participation, biodiversity and the number of species identified.

Members of the public are also encouraged to participate in the Sunshine Coast BioBlitz. You can participate in your own backyard, local park, beach or anywhere outside!

Follow the links below for more information.

Our goals for BioBlitz events are:

Increase public awareness of the diversity of life around them as well as the ecosystem services these species provide.

1.

2.

To popularize science and inspire naturalists of all ages.

3.

To generate valuable scientific data on the Sunshine Coast.

4.

To build partnerships and increase knowledge within our community.

Our 2020 BioBlitz was a huge success, lasting an entire month, spanning the whole lower Sunshine Coast, and totaling an impressive 3,335 observations and 942 species!

Since the first BioBlitz in Washington, DC in 1996, countless BioBlitzes have been carried out all around the world with the intention to highlight biodiversity, the variety of life, all around us.

In 2008, The Loon Foundation joined this global initiative and has organized a Sunshine Coast BioBlitz every year since! Part contest, part scientific enterprise, and part educational event, a BioBlitz brings together scientists, naturalists, and community members of all ages to count as many species from as many different taxonomic groups as they can in a timed survey of a chosen site.

About the BioBlitz

Donations go towards our many scientific endeavours and community events, including the annual BioBlitz!

The 2023 BioBlitz has been funded in part by the NSERC Promoscience Program and the BC Community Gaming Fund.

Thank you to our funders and sponsors for supporting science and discovery in our community!
