Education and Events Coordinator
Location: In-person, ḵalpilin (Pender Harbour)
Hours: 35 hours/week
Compensation: $30/hour
The Loon Foundation is recruiting for the role of Education and Events Coordinator to support the Foundation’s mission. Based in the community of ḵalpilin (Pender Harbour) on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast, the Loon Foundation aims to ignite connections between people and the natural world and encourage responsible stewardship of natural resources for future generations. We operate the Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve, the Iris and Billy Griffith Nature Centre, the EarthFair Shop, and Tranquility Garden. In collaboration with the shíshálh Nation, the Loon Foundation is also developing the Pender Harbour Ocean Discovery Station (PODS), a cutting-edge marine research centre, educational facility, and community hub. The Education Coordinator will lead in the design, delivery, promotion, and evaluation of all Loon Foundation educational programming and community events. The focus is on interactive, place-based, experiential opportunities that deepen connections with the natural world, improve environmental awareness, attitudes, skills, and facilitate community participation in environmental stewardship efforts.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Conduct outreach to local educators, leaders, organizations, and community members to recruit participation in educational programs and events.
· Develop, prepare, and lead the scheduling and delivery of school programs, youth summer camps, adult education workshops, field trips, and special community events.
· Support community science initiatives, including the Coastal Waters Monitoring Program and Sunshine Coast BioBlitz.
· Track program deliverables, evaluate effectiveness of educational programs, and contribute to the development of reports for funders and stakeholders.
· Collaborate with expert scientists, First Nations knowledge keepers, and local organizations to integrate scientific insights, Traditional Ecological Knowledge, and local expertise into educational programs.
· Promote safe, respectful, and inclusive participation in all activities.
Required Skills and Education
· Previous university-level studies in Biology, Geography, Education, Environmental Studies, or related field.
· Knowledge of Pacific coastal ecosystems, species at risk, freshwater and marine habitats, and conservation challenges.
· Experience delivering environmental education, outdoor learning programs, or youth engagement activities.
· Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate ecological concepts for diverse audiences.
· Experience supporting or participating in field-based community science or ecological monitoring.
· Strong organizational skills, with the ability to coordinate events, manage volunteers, and maintain accurate records.
· Awareness of or willingness to engage with Indigenous knowledge systems and collaborative conservation approaches.
· Understanding of climate change adaptation, nature-based solutions, and sustainable resource management considered an asset.
Funding Note and Eligibility
This position may be funded through the Career Launcher Natural Resources Internship program.
To be eligible for this funding, applicants must:
· Be a post-secondary graduate between the ages of 15 and 30 at the start of the internship.
· Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person granted refugee status in Canada.
· Applicants cannot be previous participants in Science and Technology Internship Program (STIP).
Operations Assistant
Location: Hybrid (remote and in-person)
Hours: 35 hours/week
Compensation: $30/hour
The Loon Foundation invites applications for the role of Operations Assistant to support the Foundation’s mission by coordinating internal systems, tracking clean tech and environmental metrics, and helping implement digital tools that reduce emissions and strengthen science-based conservation programs. Based in the community of ḵalpilin (Pender Harbour) on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast, the mission of our non-profit charitable organization is to ignite connections between people and the natural world and encourage responsible stewardship of natural resources for future generations. The Loon Foundation operates the Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve, the Iris and Billy Griffith Nature Centre, the EarthFair Shop and Tranquility Garden. The Loon Foundation in collaboration with the shíshálh Nation are also now developing the Pender Harbour Ocean Discovery Station (PODS), a cutting-edge new marine research centre, educational facility, and community hub.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Maintain and improve cloud-based platforms to support workflows and remote collaboration.
· Track and organize operational metrics to support reporting, evaluation, and sustainability goals.
· Organize and manage internal files, staff records, Board documentation, and digital archives.
· Schedule meetings, attend and take minutes, and circulate concise records for staff and Board.
· Contribute to the development of the Pender Harbour Ocean Discovery Station by supporting documentation, planning, and coordination.
· Assist with preparation of grant documents and sustainability reports.
· Support environmental education programs, events, and outreach initiatives.
· Provide basic troubleshooting and technical support for digital tools and shared systems.
· Manage databases of members, volunteers, donors, and stakeholders.
· Assist with event logistics, program coordination, and internal communications.
Required Skills and Education
· Post-secondary degree in environmental science, sustainability, computer science, resource management, or a related field.
· Proficiency with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, shared drives, and video conferencing tools.
· Familiarity with CRM-style databases, file organization, and document management systems.
· Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills across multiple systems and files.
· Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
· Positive and collaborative approach to projects and tasks.
· Interest in sustainability, environmental data, or clean tech applications in nonprofit operations an asset.
