Field Work Friday

It's #FieldWorkFriday

Well…that's a wrap! We concluded our juvenile salmon survey on Friday afternoon. We did try our hand at fishing and caught a couple three-spined stickleback, but we decided to leave the fish alone for the season and focus on celebrating the year's successes. We also celebrated Calvin's first birthday!

This year, we caught a total of 21,216 fish and 6,273 of them were salmon. Of the salmon, the majority were caught at Irvines Landing (4,141 at Irvines Landing compared to 2,132 at Gerrans Bay). The highest catch was chum salmon, followed by pink, coho, and chinook.

It is our last week of regular season European green crab (EGC) monitoring. We set traps in Halfmoon Bay and in Bargain Harbour. Our crews in Powell River also set in Lang Bay. Unfortunately, on Tuesday, we caught another EGC in Halfmoon Bay. This triggered additional trapping, which resulted in another pair of EGC caught on Thursday. We will continue sampling, and we call on our community to help us protect our coast!

While these two surveys are finishing for the season, we hope for some rain to start counting the returning salmon in Anderson and Myers creeks. Currently, there are no continual flows in the creek to allow salmon to enter. We did a survey in the estuary and saw two coho hiding in one of the side channels. Have you seen salmon in any of your local creeks?
