Field Work Friday

It's #FieldWorkFriday

This week kicked off with another two European green crabs caught in Halfmoon Bay. That brings the total up to five crab detections at this site. We will be working closely with Fisheries and Oceans Canada and other NGOs throughout the Howe Sound area to determine next steps. Please keep an eye out at local beaches, especially estuarine environments, and report them if you see them.

This weekend was our monthly nearshore bird survey. It was an incredible day to be out on the water. We identified 13 species of waterbirds including common Loon, common merganser, and short-billed gulls. We completed water quality and biotoxin sampling as well.

Our creeks are still too low to allow salmon to enter, however, the predators seem to be able to catch some food. We found the jaw of a male chum near the estuary.

We had the pleasure of working with the Raincoast Foundation to collect water quality data as well as collecting samples for hydrocarbon analysis. Our third Healthy Waters Report should be public soon. You can view the first two reports at https://www.raincoast.org/reports/anderson-creek-101736/
