Field Work Friday
It’s #FieldWorkFriday
This week kicked off with the return of the forage fish survey. We had a spectacular morning at Baker Beach on Monday with ah-mazing volunteers!. This survey will be done weekly to identify evidence of spawning. Once spawn is detected, then we will start surveys at additional beaches.
We had an amazing time up at the fifth annual Larval crab wrap up event hosted by the Hakai Sentinel’s of Change team at the Coastal Center of Dialogue on Quadra Island. We learned about some of the survey results from 2026 and had a glimpse into some of the research projects that have stemmed from the data collection. We hope to be able to share the final report with you early in the new year.
We had really hoped to see the return of the rain by this week so the salmon could enter into the creeks. The creek bed is still dry below the outflow ponds in Anderson but the fish are trying their best to get in. With the low flows, the bears have been having a feast! The peak of the salmon run is usually at the end of October. We hope for some prolonged rain to get them in the system soon.
