This week kicked off with our juvenile salmon and larval crab surveys. We did not see any salmon last week, but we are still seeing many juvenile sticklebacks in both parts of the harbour. For our light trap surveys we have seen an incredible number of kelp pipefish. We still are seeing a few Dungeness megalapae in the traps as well. Sadly, both of these surveys will be wrapping up this week.
We had planned to do a seagrass survey during this week’s low tides but unfortunately, the wind was not favourable. We decided to include one of our favourite seagrass survey photos from the past. We aim to complete this survey on September 9.
Our water quality monitoring program continues. We have had an amazing time at our summer camp learning with participants about the importance of water and how to monitor the wetland using water ranger kits. Do you know an organization or group that would like to get involved with water quality monitoring in our area? Or even an enthusiastic individual? We are happy to provide a kit, training and support to volunteers who could commit to once a month testing at a local waterbody.
There will be a few clean up events scheduled in September. The Backroad Trash Bash is scheduled for September 12, with a base camp operating out of Pender Lions Park. Check out https://letstalk.scrd.ca/trash-bash for more information. Also, we will be hosting an underwater dive cleanup of Hotel Lake on September 14.
