Fieldwork Friday
Its #FieldWorkFriday
Spring is near and field work is starting to pick up again! We ended last week with a smolts survey in the rain at Irvine's Landing. Still no salmon, but we did catch a stickleback! At Monday's smolts survey in Gerrans Bay, we caught our herring babies again – it's so much fun to watch them grow. We also caught a bay goby, a flat fish, some pipe fish, and a sculpin.
Sunday morning, we had our coastal waterbird survey in Pender Harbour . In the afternoon, we headed out to Baker Beach searching for herring spawn. Unfortunately, no spawn was found, but we did have a group of sea lions hanging out… plus some nudibranchs and sea stars.
Sunday was International Women's Day! We were happy to be joined by many amazing women volunteers for our surveys on Sunday. Thank you to all the incredible women, and everyone who supports them, who show up for our community and the environment.
On Wednesday, we checked our herring curtains. Lots of eggs from other species were found, including new tubesnout eggs, but no herring spawn. We did have a new species of nudibranch on one of the curtains in Gerrans Bay, a Shag-rug Nudibranch (photo ! We are still hopeful we will get another spawn.
Please email Jenn at jenn@loonfoundation.org if you'd like to get involved. Our schedule is out till the end of April.
