Ocean Comes Alive with Herring Spawn
The ocean has come alive with the annual herring spawn—and so has the Sunshine Coast community!
Thank you to the Coast Reporter for the splashy feature in last Friday's paper. Our team has been thrilled to work on a Herring Curtain Pilot Project in ḵalpilin (Pender Harbour). This project explores new ways to support Pacific herring by installing spawning curtains that create additional habitat for herring eggs during the spawning season.
Pacific herring are a keystone species on the coast. Their spawn feeds salmon, seabirds, whales, and many other marine animals, making healthy spawning events essential to the entire coastal ecosystem.
A big thank you to the community members and partners helping to monitor this work!
