Fieldwork Friday
It's #FieldWorkFriday
Last Friday, we ended the week with our first juvenile salmon survey of the year. Our youngest volunteer, Calvin, came out for his first survey at only four months old! No salmon yet, but we aim to begin our data set at zero. Thank you to all the volunteers who came out to help and enjoy the beautiful sunny February afternoon.
On Monday, we had our first Gerrans Bay Juvenile Salmon Survey. At this site, we also didn't catch any salmon, but we did catch a larval forage fish which is likely one of our herring babies from the curtain project. We hope to keep watching the herring grow throughout the season, this week the larval fish was around 1.5 cm long.
We are continuing to check our herring curtain in Whiskey Slough. All the curtains have been fouled with algae during these warmer days. A few other species were found on the curtains including more tubesnout and nudibranch eggs, sea stars, a sea cucumber, and jellyfish polyps (photo 6).
This week we also had our first loon sighting on Garden Bay Lake. If you see loons on any of the lakes, we would love to hear about it!
We have an upcoming event on World Water Day (March 22) at Lily Lake and would love your help. We will be completing a shoreline cleanup through Tyner Park and along the highway near the turtle beach/pullout. Join us at 1:00 PM at Tyner Park, Sunday March 22. We hope to see you there!
Please email Jenn at jenn@loonfoundation.org if you'd like to get involved. Our schedule is out till the end of April.
