It's Field Work Friday!
This week kicked off with a salmon escapement survey in Myers Creek. The creek is still low, but the water level has risen enough for salmon to travel all the way to the golf course. Our salmon counts so far for the season are:
Anderson Creek - 981 chum and 16 coho
Myers Creek - 554 chum and nine coho
One of the coho identified in Myers Creek was a “jack”. A jack is a male coho that returns from the ocean after two years rather than waiting until their third year. While they are too small to compete with the larger, full grown males, their small size allows them to sneak in between a male and female to fertilize her eggs first! Having jacks fertilize some of the eggs, allows for a greater biological diversity throughout the population.
This week, we were very happy to introduce Emma to the creeks this week! The salmon did not disappoint. Check back next week to see the results!
We also continued our forage fish beach surveys. We did not find evidence of Pacific sand lance (PSL) spawning yet at Baker Beach, but we did have reports of a big pod of Pacific white sided dolphins in the area over the weekend. Maybe they are also waiting for the return of the PSL?!
A HUGE thank you to everyone who supports the work that we do! We could not do it without our incredible volunteers.
