Field Work Friday
It is #FieldWorkFriday and National Volunteer Week!
First and foremost, we would like to remind you that it is our volunteer appreciation event tomorrow at 4 PM. If you are a volunteer, or you are interested in volunteering and meeting our team, please come by the Tranquility Garden located behind the Earthfair store. We hope to see you there!
We started this week off with cuteness overload. We observed our first octopus paralarvae in the light trap at Irvines Landing on Friday. We love watching them swim around in the spoon. We also had other amazing creatures, including a Quillfish, larval black clawed crestleg crabs, and polychaetes.
We continued with our juvenile salmon surveys. It was a great low tide, but the numbers remain low, indicating that we have likely peaked in our juvenile salmon numbers for the season, and the majority have headed out to deeper waters. We will now wait for the Coho and Chinook salmon to arrive. We still have incredible creatures that we document, including the bay goby and the saddleback gunnel.
On Saturday, we were present at the Rotary Community Connections Fair at the Sechelt Seniors Activity Center and the Climate Change Fair at the Gibsons Public Market. It was great connecting with so many community members. A huge thank you to the volunteers who helped with our booths.
For Earth Day, we had a team complete a survey for European green crabs in Whiskey Slough. Thankfully, we did not find any, but we did get a few graceful crabs. The graceful crab is a small crab that is often misidentified as a juvenile Dungeness. You can spot the difference based on a small notch in the carapace that is located behind the longest spine. Dungeness crabs do not have this notch, and the last spine is the longest on their carapace.
As it is National Volunteer Week, we would love to give a shout-out to all of the volunteers who are helping to create a better world. We are truly grateful for your time, energy, and compassion. Thank you!
