Fieldwork Friday
It's Fieldwork Friday!
On Tuesday, we conducted our monthly water quality sampling in Anderson Creek. We appreciate the volunteer support to assist our team in sampling. We will be expanding our freshwater monitoring program this year, and we are looking for keen volunteers who are interested in becoming environmental stewards of freshwater ecosystems on the Sunshine Coast. If you would like to be involved in freshwater monitoring, restoration projects, or shoreline cleanups, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Good news – the herring have hatched! Our curtain checks on Wednesday revealed most of the herring spawn have hatched. One of our curtains in Whiskey Slough had two sea cucumbers, four seastars, five horned nudibranchs, and snails on it. Our curtains have also provided spawning habitat for other species. We have found snail, nudibranch, and tubesnout eggs on the curtains.
Next week, we start our Juvenile Salmon Program! This is a volunteer and staff favorite that we are so excited to get started on next Friday. Juvenile Salmon Surveys are conducted at two sites in Pender Harbour and involve measuring and counting salmon while counting bycatch. We find so many cool species in this survey, opalescent squid being a favourite!
Our volunteer schedule is available from February to April. If you'd like to get involved, email Jenn at jenn@loonfoundation.org.
