Field Work Friday

It’s #FieldWorkFriday

This week kicked off with us exploring the low tide at Baker Beach with the Pender Harbour High School X block class we are working with for eight weeks. We identified sea stars, learned about crab moults, and had a quick refresher on crab identification with the students.

Our team continued to see chinook and coho smolts in our sets at Irvines Landing and Gerrans Bay, and we identified kelp pipe fish and shiner perch.

We have been very lucky to discover so many octopus in our light trap this year. This week we also found our first squid and an incredible 488 Dungeness megalopae yesterday!

Our European green crab (EGC) survey at Bargain Narrows revealed lots of little shore, red rock, hairy helmet, and graceful crabs. Thankfully there are still not any EGC!

The team and volunteers have been busy spring cleaning at the Iris and Billy Griffith Centre to prepare for summer camp. There is also a Tranquility Garden volunteer clean up next Thursday and Friday to prepare for summer events.
