Field Work Friday
It is #FieldWorkFriday!
This week kicked off with our first Dungeness crab of the season arriving in the light trap. We are so excited for their arrival. We have teamed up with the Hakai Institute Sentinels of Change program to collect samples for population genetics study. It is the second year of sampling and we hope to have the results from last year soon.
We completed an European green crab survey with our X-block class. We learned about different identification features, how to tell if it is a male or a female, how to measure the carapace, with a focus on what makes European green crabs invasive. Thankfully we only caught red rock crabs as well as a few black-eyed gobies and sculpins.
We continued our juvenile salmon surveys and are still observing pink and chum salmon. We have also identified a few herring, anchovy and shiner perch. It is always a surprise bringing in the net.
We had a great time decorating and participating in the May Day parade. A huge thank you to our volunteers, staff, and board who came out to support the festivities. We won third place!
We could not do this work without the help of our incredible volunteers and supporters! Want to join us? Please email Jenn at jenn@loonfoundation.org or visit our website at loonfoundation.org/volunteer.
